Sail, paddle and dive your way along the wild southern barrier reef, camp on idyllic tropical islets and float beneath a forest canopy.
Day 0Arrive at the Belize International Airport where you will be met a local representative. Once through customs we connect with Maya Air for a scenic flight down the coast of Belize to the seaside village of Dangriga where we overnight at the Jungle Lodge. This day is your day to arrive before the trip starts, meet your fellow travelers, and acclimatize to your new tropical environment. The evening is a good time to explore the sights and sounds of Dangriga and enjoy dinner at one of the restaurants in town. (Dinner not included on this day)
Day 1After an early breakfast we charter by motorboat to the barrier reef. Today we begin with the fundamentals of sea kayaking and sailing; we learn and practice paddle strokes, self rescue and group rescue techniques before heading out in the afternoon to try our hand at sailing. Time permitting, we can also enjoy some initial snorkeling. B,L,D (Camping)
Day 2-6Expect an adventure of a lifetime as we explore south and east of Dangriga along this wild section of the barrier reef. Our days are a blend of sailing and paddling, swimming and snorkeling in the turquoise waters and camping amongst the hundreds of tropical islands along the reef. We engage in a variety of activities as we travel each day; learn new paddle skills, hone your sailing skills, try your hand at navigating with a marine chart and compass. A big part of each day is to explore the many coral reefs we encounter along the way. We also travel through productive fishing grounds with bonefish, tarpon, snapper, barracuda providing excellent sport as well as wonderful variety at the dinner table. For those who savour the simple pleasures of life, you can master the art of relaxing in a hammock with a good book while your guides prepare a fresh seafood dinner. B,L,D (Camping)
Day 7In the morning we cross Victoria Channel to the mainland coast. On reaching our take-out, we pack up our gear, load the boats and drive north to Dangriga, about an hour and a half away. As a change of pace we spend this night at Chaleanors Hotel, enjoy a traditional Belizean dinner in town and discuss the next days plan of action. B,L,D (Hotel or Lodge)
Day 9-10Early in the morning we leave Dangriga, heading overland to our river put-in.
For this portion of the trip we use two person inflatable kayaks which combine stability of a raft with the maneuverability of a kayak. We begin by travelling slowly, learning different paddle strokes and getting a feel of how the boats handle on the water. Changing our environments from the palm trees and turquoise waters of the Caribbean to the green, lush jungle is very exciting. As the trip progresses we learn how to navigate through small rapids and pour-overs becoming proficient with reading the water and choosing the right channels. Arriving at our established bush camps in the afternoon we have time to explore the surrounding forest, learn more of the plants and wildlife and the later afternoon is a great time for photography. At night we have the chance to go for a night walk to try to see some nocturnal animals. B,L,D (Camping)
Day 11Continue downstream to our take-out. Return overland to Belize City where our trip finishes in the afternoon. Hotel is included on this night. From mid February through to April this trip may end in the southern village of Punta Gorda. Flight connections can easily be made from this point. B,L
